DES(1-3) IGF-1 lacks the first three amino acids of native IGF-1, which sharply reduces binding to IGF binding proteins and makes it substantially more potent in cell assays. Its very short half-life is the defining pharmacokinetic feature and the reason it is studied locally rather than systemically.
